Emotion and Colour / Meditations on Joy

Design Psychology - Colour Chart for Emotions

Orlagh O Brien, a visual communicator has researched extensively in. a personal project the relationship between certain colours and emotions. I find this information fascinating and very useful when prescribing colours for certain areas in building's / using colour to communicate in general. Our emotions and environments are so intrinsically linked, and if we can take into account the emotions humans associate with certain colours there is extra scope to make spaces feel comfortable, relaxing and safe using this data. There is a link to her website below so you can explore the data in detail. It is well worth a look.

I had the good fortune to come across the beautiful work of Orlagh O Brien in the book "Joyful" by Ingrid Fetell Lee. The book is really a philosophy of creating joy in our lives through aesthetics, and an exploration of why these things can provide joy. I particularly liked her dive into why humans love colour / and why they still find it so visually nourishing when once it was a sign of actual physical nourishment- but we still feel nourished by just seeing vivid colour now. Thank you Lea for the recommendation of this book! And thank you Elva for asking Lea! Very formative!
